Hello again class. I hope that you will be able to settle down enought to study the plant I have in mind. If you will gather around this table here... Thank you. In front of each of you I have set a plant that is of the orchid family. If you look at the flowers you should be able to recognize it as such.

I was planning for you to help gather the seeds of this orchid, the Cheer Orchid, while I told you more about it. First, let me show you how to gather the seeds. You won't need gloves as the seed are very gentle on the skin. Look for the pods at the base of the plant. They are easily distinguished from the rest of the plant by their red and green mottled color. Slice the pod off the plant cleanly and hold it over one of the silver dishes. Look for the split down the middle and slice it cleanly in half. Then scrape off the seeds from the insides. Do this while I tell you about the plant.

The Cheer Orchid
Hilarus Festium
The Cheer Orchid is a plant that blooms around mid November and by Midwinter its seeds are ready to be harvested. The seeds are commonly dried and ground into a powder for use. The main use is blowing it around the room where a party is to be held. It settles into a fine powder on the surfaces of seats and dishes where the unsuspecting guests sit. It is said to taste very pleasant, like vanilla, but many people avoid eating it because of its side affects of extreme giddyness, chattering, and laughter that is so hard and long that people occasionally choke. After the effects have worn off, you are likely to experience moodiness and melancholy. Cheer Orchid powder is safe when sat upon or obsorbed through the skin, causing far lighter effects than when ingested and livening up a party considerably.

Please bring your dishes up to me. I will give a prize of a packet of powder to the person who has collected the most. No homework!

Today we will see just how much your brains have learned. I have chosen a potion that you have made before. I will give you five minutes to study the instructions on the board before removing them. You will then make that potion from memory. This is because you will not always have a book to refer to. Ready? Go.

Potions Blackboard
Concentrating Potion
Ingredients:
Fire mint
Colloid of silver
1 Sickle
Water
Flobberworm slime
3 Gnome teeth, crushed
Dragon's blood

Instructions: Fill your cauldron with 5 1/4 cups of water. Next add a tablespoon of fire mint. Stir once. Add the gnome teeth and let sit for 5 minutes. Crush five grains of dragon's blood and rub it on the sickle. Pour two 1/2 teaspoons of the colloid into a bowl and dip the sickle in it. Put your cauldron over the fire and bring it to a simmer without boiling it. Pour in the colloid and drop in the sickle. When a light green steam rises from your cauldron, bring it off the heat. Pour half the mixture into your alembic. Set the alembic over a low flame, put a bowl below the spout of the alembic and wait while it distills.

Five minutes are up! You now have forty-five minutes to complete your potion.

Class is now over. Bottle up your disasters and bring it forward. Your homework is to read up on the recipe and figure out where you went wrong. I will see you again in January.

For the past few classes, we have been comparing photos of 'traditional' roles that witches and wizards take in the imagination of the Muggle mind. I have asked you to write about these historical translations and what you think they mean. For the last exercise, I ask you to compare how they are alike and how they are different in their meaning. Imagine that you were a muggle, coming across them. How would you feel? What would they mean to you?

Thank you class, that will do. Please put your quills away. Class is dismissed.

We will, again, study the Art of Pyromancy. In the center of each table there is a bowl filled with fire. You will each find place at your right hand a bowl of herbs, namely betony, plantain, nettles, and thyme. These you will use to divine. I shall guide you in the conducting of the ritual. Would everyone please stand? Thank you. Now hold your bowl of herbs in your wand hand and hold your other hand up in front of your chest, palm forward. Good. When I say begin, everyone shall walk evenly around your table, staring at the back of the person in front of them. Walk until I say stop, then sit on the nearest chair. Ready? Begin.

Stop! Everyone sit down. Now we will stare into the flames for three minutes, pondering the future.

Three minutes are up. Now I would like everyone on the North side of the table to take a handful of their herbs and toss them into the flames. Good. Now everyone on the South... the East... and finally the West. For the next step, I would like everyone to sit back. I am going to extinguish the flames. There!

Carefully, for the bowls may still be hot, pass the bowl around for everyone at the table to study the herbs. I wish for you to write down your observations and what you see.

Class is over now. Please put everything away. I know you will have a wonderful holiday and I hope to see you next year. Good bye and good luck!

Hello class. First, I would like to read aloud the letter I received from our werewolf corrospondent.

Dear First Year Hogwarts Students,
Thank you for your interest in werewolves and lycanthropy. I hope to answer some of your questions to promote greater understanding of werewolves. Your questions and my answers are listed below.
What is the most common question you are asked when people learn you are a werewolf? Probably the most common question I'm asked is not asked directly, but I can tell people wish to know 'Are you just suddenly going to turn and bite me?' or 'Am I putting myself in danger standing this close to you?' The answer is a very definite NO to both questions. I always try to stay in a place where I can do no harm during the full moon and at all other times, I am a normal human being. In one instance, a human with lycanthropy became very fond of being a werewolf, so he mutated to be constantly half wolf and half human. When he bit people during another part of the moon cycle, he did cause the victim to become more wolfish, but not a true werewolf.
Is transforming painful? Yes. Anytime that your body mutates, it is generally accompanied by great pain.
If I met a werewolf in the human state, would I be able to tell his condition? In most cases, no.
Are there female werewolves as well as male? Yes, both boys and girls, men and women can become werewolves if bitten.
Can animals become werewolves? No one is quite sure of this answer. There have been reports of wereanimals, but this may have been caused by a spell instead of a bite.
Thank you for your questions. I hope that I have provided satisfactory answers and I welcome more quesitons.
Yours truly,
A. Werewolf

Of course, his name isn't A. Werewolf but he wishes to remain anonymous. Now, if any of those questions were yours, please take out a quill and parchment and write a short bit about if that answered your question and if the answer was what you expected. If none of your questions were chosen, choose one of the questions to write about and tell if the answer was what you expected.

Time is up class. Please turn in your papers. Your homework is to write a thank you letter and get it to me before you leave for break. Have a wonderful safe winter break!

Before you head off to vacation, I thought I would give you a bit more to think about. Please take out a quill and parchment to take notes.

Every number has a meaning and a personality that goes with it. By knowing someone's name, you can figure their number and from there, their personality. I will be teaching you the meanings that go with people's numbers

One
Keywords: Leader, Loner, Independent, Focused, and Determined
Ones set goals and stick to them. They are leaders and inventors.
They don't like working with others and often refuse to take orders.
Frequent bad traits of the one are being self-centered, egotistical, and domineering

Two
Keywords: Interaction, Creative, Harmony, Loyal, Fair, and Balanced
Twos represent equality, two way communication, co-operation, and harmony
They also represent conflicts, opposing forces, and contrast: day and night, good and evil
Bad trait of the two include being withdrawn, moody, self-conscious, and indecisive.

Does everyone have that? Good. Please think of someone you know whose name boils down to one or two. Your homework is to write about how this does or doesn't describe them. Class is dismissed and happy holidays!

I promised you last class that we would be finished with the wood charm. Correct. However, today I wish to be absolutely sure that you have completed the match to needle charm, and back. So everyone standing on that half of the room, please come stand on this side of my desk. Line up neatly and no shoving. Everyone will get their turn. Now everyone on that side of the room, come stand on this side of my desk. Good. Now here is what we are going to do. You on the right, you are going to turn this match into a needle and give it to the person on your left and then go to the back of the line. You on the left, you will turn it back to a match, give it to the next person in the line on the right and go to the end of your line. This will go on until we reach the end of the line. You may begin.

Well done. We are now back at the beginning, so I would like the two lines to switch. Those on the left will now turn the match to a needle, and those on the right will turn the needle to a match.

That exercise has been completed now, so please return to your seats. You have no homework over the holiday break, however everyone who is going home, I will remind you that you may not do any spells! I repeat: NO MAGIC OVER THE HOLIDAY! Got that? Good. Class is dismissed and I will see you next year.

Before your brains go into break mode, I would like you to learn two more runes: Hagalaz and Jera. Quills and parchment out and please copy what is on the blackboard.

Jera
Harvest
Use to create positive, lasting change.
If found in a reading, it means that a project is going well and success comes to those who wait for it. Do not rush your project and all will be well.
If found reversed in a reading, it means that you are wandering aimlessly in a project, you need to set deadlines and goals.

Hagalaz
Also known as: Hagal
Delays, Upheaval, Risks
Can be used to turn someone's past against them
If you draw this rune, expect a great upheaval in your life. It may be good, however. It may an awakening to greater knowledge or a great idea. Be prepared, though, that this will not be an easy time for you.

There you have them! Quills down, then, and parchments away. Your homework is to simply review all the runes you have learnt so far and to try to not forget the Runic Alphabet over winter break. Class is dismissed for the year.

From there, we will get to explore London. This will be an all day trip, which is why all of the Houses are here together. All classes are cancelled for the rest of the day, except Astronomy. I must remind you to watch your language. No mentioning things like 'spells' or 'wands'. While you are enjoying yourselves, please remember to take mental notes as I will be asking questions next class. Now please line up for a dress inspection.

Now I know you have all been out in London all day, so I won't have you do anything too difficult! Instead, I am going to tell you about the legend of Pegasus.

Pegasus was a winged horse born from the slain neck of the monster Medusa. He was a pure white winged horse. Although mortal, he did many services to Zeus. One of them was when a young hero became too confident and tried to fly to the heavens on Pegasus's back, Pegasus threw him off, crippling him for life. When Pegasus died, Zeus made him a constellation so that he may fly the skies forever.

There. You may go now. Your homework is to find an image of Pegasus and find the constellation in the sky. Off you go, back to bed now! I hope you have a wonderful winter break.

Hello class. I thought today I would combine a translation of runes with learning the meaning of a new one. So I will hand out these sheet with the words for you to translate. I want you to translate it, then I will give you a brief test on what you just read. You have, say, thirty minutes to translate it.

Thirty minutes are up, so please put your papers away in your bags and come up here for your second one. Once everyone is seated again, you may begin.

1. What rune did you read about?
2. What is its meaning?
3. What would it be used for in a test?

Thank you. That will do. It is time for you to go to your next class, so please hand up your papers so that I may grade them. Your homework is to translate the runic sheet into notes you can read at a glance. Class is dismissed.

As the days grow colder, I thought I would bring our studies of the Sight to a warmer area. The study I have in mind is the study of Fire Omens, or Pyromancy. There are many different ways of Pyromancy, but I thought we might start with a combination of Geomancy and Pyromancy. First, look at the bowls of fire in front of you. Notice that they burn by the means of a spell. Notice the lack of fuel. We shall feed them fuel and interpert the resulting flames.

First, I would like this boy here to demonstrate. Now then, dear, it isn't too hard. Just watch closely. Now take a handful of this enchanted wood. Not too big, then, just enough to cup in your palm. Hold it in your palm for thirteen seconds and then toss it into the fire. Boldly, please! Oh, dear. Dear, dear. You see, you should have seen a great burst of flame. Were you asking about your lifespan? Hopefully not. Perhaps we should move onto someone else...

Now please, only one person at a time at a table. Do as you have seen me show the other students. Take a handful, toss it into the flame and keep an open mind. You may leave once you have finished seeing all that you feel that you can see.

Hello everyone and greetings of the season! Are you excited about the holidays approaching? I was thinking that today we will be catching fairies for decorating in the Great Hall. But first, you should you should learn about them. Please take out your copy of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and turn to 'Fairies' and read about them.

Now, follow me as we go into the edge of the forests. There is a colony of fairies there that are currently hibernating in the roots of the trees. Your job will be to dig them out and trap them in the cages I give you. This shouldn't be too hard if you remember the entry in Fantastic Beasts.

Here we are. If you look in the roots of the trees in this circle, you will see a faint glowing. The fairies are quite curious, so if you make noises out side their homes, they should come out to you. Ready? Here are you cages. Off you go.

I see that your cages are all full, so class will be dismissed early. If you give them to me, I'll send them off to Professor Flitwick with a wave of my wand. Then, off you go to your next class. I won't be seeing you again until January, so I hope you have a wonderful winter break. Your only homework is to try to find a magical creature around your house. This week we will do a unit on Orchids. They are the largest family of flowering plants in the worlds. Muggles believe that 6-11% of all seed-bearing plants are orchids, but when you factor in the magical flowers, you come to at least 13%. Orchids vary greatly in their properties. Some are mild, and useful in cooking while the Stalwart Orchid is one of the most strictly controlled plants of the magical world for its uses in deadly poisons. It is listed as a Class 'B' on the 'Silent Killer Control List'.
Obviously I won't assign you this plant, however for homework, I would like you to visit this link to find out more about orchids. But for now, I would like you to read about a common magical orchid that can be found around the grounds of Hogwarts.

Tingo remotio
A tall, purple and white leafed plant, this plant is a common ingredient in many practical jokes. When ingested, it will cause the eater to first fade in colour, until they resemble a solid ghost and then over the course of six hours slowly turn purple. This plant has been attempted to be eradicated from the grounds, but due to its extensive root network, this has never happened. It may be seen sprouting from rocks, its favorite habitat, but if there has been a long drought a few stray plants will pop up in a row down the main drive.
While very rare, people will occasionally have an allergic reaction to Tingo remotio which will cause the same affects above in the reverse order, taking twice as long to complete and being accompanied by fits of sneezing.

Class will ajourn early. I want you to go outside and try to find some Tingo for yourself. DO NOT feed it to another person, rather collect a leaf and bring to me next class. Thank you. You are dismissed.

Today we will be doing a Sticking Potion. While the list of ingredients is deceptively short, I must remind you how important the oil is in the ingredient and the instructions. All else that you need to know is on the board.

Potions Blackboard
Sticking Solution
Ingredients:

1 Pine Resin Ball
Oil of any kind of vegetable
Dried flobberworms
Horklump spores

Pour a tablespoon of oil into your cauldron and swirl it around, coating the side thoroughly. Next, take a pinch of horklump spores and blow into the oil. Repeat until the inside of your cauldron is pink. Next, take two dried flobberworms and set them in a separate dish. Pour on just enough oil to cover them. Wait for three minutes until they turn a faint blue/gray. Pour off the oil and go over to the sinks. Holding the dish under the water, turn it on to a slight drip. As each drip hits the flobberworms, the dried flesh will dissolve. Do this until they are both liquid and not a moment longer. Take the ball of resin and roll it in the flobberworm slime. Then take that ball and roll it around your cauldron, picking up the horklump spores and coating it with oil. Now, suspend that ball in the air above a flame using a spell. The ball cannot touch anything other than air. The oil will burn off and the spores will embed themselves into the solidifing flobberworm slime. When it burns no longer, remove it from the flame and let cool on a gold dish. When you need to stick something, rub this ball against the surface for three strokes to the North and on the other surface, three strokes to the South. Put the two together and they will bond quite strongly.

Class! Your time is up so bring me your Sticking Sticks in their gold dishes. Clean out your cauldrons and write down your homework which is to why the oil doesn't ruin the ability of this to stick as well as if you think that it makes the ball stronger. That is all.

Today we will be first learning about, then working with, dittany. First off, I must warn you that dittany is highly flammable. There will be no fooling around or off you go! Please take out your quills and parchement and take notes.

Dittany is mainly used to prevent scarring after a magical injury. It must be applied within 3 hours of the injury. Dittany itself is a plant that can grow to over two feet high. It has white/purple blossoms and spiky leaves. The scienitific name for dittany is Dictamnus albus. Dittany produces a sap that is highly flammable and has been known to burst into flames during the summer months. Today we will be collecting this sap for it is valued in scar healing like mentioned before as well as a perfume. Take out your dragon hide gloves now and take a box of these bottles.

We are now going to a special section in greenhouse 2 which is flame proof and has several buckets of water in case of emergencies. Using your gloves, scrape the sap into the bottles. Since these plants are very ripe, you shouldn't have any trouble.

Class time is up. Please bring your bottles to me. Keep your gloves on and wash them before taking them off. Your Homework is to write a paper on your experience with collecting the sap. Also, please draw a picture of the plant. Class is dismissed.

Today we will be studying another rune that is most commonly called Dagaz. Here is the summory of Dagaz:

Dagaz is also known as Daeg. If it is drawn in a runic reading, then generally the person is feeling the need to be invisble. If it is draw reverse, then the person is feeling the need to be less invisble. You can use this rune as a way to travel unnoticed. Oddly enough, this rune has the main meaning breakthrough.

Have you finished writing your notes? Well, then, here is the next one, Uruz.

Uruz is also known as Ur. It stands for strength, determinations, perservance, courage, health, and assertivness. It is a rune that should be used in all healings. When drawn in a reading, the person who is being read for should be prepared for opportunity disguised as loss. If drawn in reverse, the person being read for should look deep with in themselves to see if they have been missing these opportunities in the set backs.

Once you finish on this one, I want you to get your notes on Mannaz as well. Pretend that you have drawn Mannaz, Dagaz, and Uruz for the past, present, and future. Write a report telling me how you would plan for the future and how you would interpret it.

It is ten minutes until your next class. Please put your quills away. If you have completed your report, please hand it up. If you haven't, finish it for homework. Off you go!

Ravenclaw Time: 1:00
Hufflepuff Time: 9:00
Slytherin Time: 1:00

Today we are going to continue our discussion on werewolves. We will be learning the distinguishing characteristics of the said beast. Please get out your quills and paper. The three main points to remember when distinguishing a werewolf from an ordinary wolf is to check three parts: the pupils of the eyes, the snout, and the tail. Highlight on your paper: Pupils, Snout, Eyes. Now for explanations of each.
If you ever have looked at a cat's eyes in bright light, you will see that the pupils are slits instead of rounds. If you look at a human's eyes at any light, the pupils will remain round. A werewolf always has slit pupils when in the transformed state, whether it is light or dark.

A wolf has a long, thin, pointed snout with a black nose. A werewolf, on the other hand, has a pigmentless nose with a long, thick pointed snout. The eyes are also slightly pigmentless and the eye rims are pure pink.

A wolf's tail is quite even all the way through, where as the werewolf has a remarkably thin tail that ends in a tuft not unlike a lions.

These are the characteristics that are the easiest to distinguish. There are body structrual traits as well, like bones that are in different places, but you must see the skeleton for that.

For homework, I would like you to research a picture of a wolf and draw your own. Then, from what I have just told you, create a drawing of a werewolf. That is due on Tuesday. Class is dismissed.

Muggle Studies: First Year: Week 3: Wednesday

Professor Charity Burbage
Wednesday
Gryffindor Time: 10:00
Ravenclaw Time: 11:00
Hufflepuff Time: 9:00
Slytherin Time: 11:00

I thought that it was time for you to learn about the currency system that British Muggles use. They have eight coins and four banknotes. The coins are 1 penny, 2 pence, 5 pence, 10 pence, 20 pence, 50 pence, 1 pound, and 2 pounds and the notes are the 5 pound note, the 10 pound note, the 20 pound note and the 50 pound note. They use the decimal system meaning that there are one hundred pence to a pound.
To give you an idea on how much a pound is worth, consider this:
One galleon is worth £2.62
One sickle is worth £0.15
One knut is worth £0.005

This means that you need two knuts to get even one penny.
Now I want you to try to convert these problems. You may certainly use a calculator.

Pounds to galleons
£4
£8
£3.98
£1
£7.42
£2.11

I hope that you have figured all of these out. Next time maybe we'll try the reverse. For now, it is time to go. No homework, but please come dressed in Muggle clothing next class and come at 9 o'clock. I have a surprise for everyone!

Care of Magical Creatures: First Year: Week 3: Wednesday

Professor Kettleburn
Wednesday
Gryffindor Time: 11:00
Ravenclaw Time: 10:00
Hufflepuff Time: 10:00
Slytherin Time: 9:00

Today I want to explain to you the different sorts of diets of animals. Generally, you can sort animals into three catagories based on their diet: Herbavore, Carnivore, and Omnivore. A carnivore is an animal that eats only meat. An example of a carnivore is a griffin. A herbivore is an animal that eats only plants. An example of a herbivore is a unicorn. An omnivore is an animal that eats meat and plants. An example of an omnivore is a gnome because a gnome will eat both bugs and the roots of plants.

I want you to think back to October, when I had you make a chart that had you comparing the different traits of different creatures. Now, I want you to make that same chart, only comparing a herbavore, a carnivore, and a ominivore. You don't have to use my examples, you can find your own. I would recommend that you get out your copy of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them for this exersise. I think you have about forty-five minutes to complete this chart. I expect it done by the end of the class.

Forty-five minutes are up! I want all finished charts handed back in to me. If your chart isn't finished, then your homework is to finish it as well as write a report that defines the three catagories and give three examples of each. Class is dismissed.

Hello again class! Today we will be practicing what we have been learning in the past weeks because I have noticed that not all of you have mastered the spells and motions. So first, wands out! Now, I am going to come around to each table and have you demonstrate the motions. This one first! Let me see your swish. Good. Flick! Ok, now the point. Very good. I want you to practice those while I move on to the next tables.

Back to the first table! I want to see your levitation spells. I think that you have all mastered that one. Keep practicing though!

And back to you for the third and last time. This time I want to see you lumos and nox. Hmm... this one needs a bit of work. Try harder and practice all of the spells and motions.

Class time is up. Your homework is to practice even more! Class is dismissed.

Astronomy: First Year: Week 3: Wednesday

Professor Sinistra
Wednesday
Gryffindor Time: Midnight
Ravenclaw Time: Midnight
Hufflepuff Time: Midnight
Slytherin Time: Midnight

Tonight we will begin by learning vocabulary. Please get out a quill and some parchment. I will want you to study these words for homework.

Apparent magnitude. The brightness of an astronomical object, as observed on Earth and referred to the appearance of some objects chosen as standards. The scale of magnitudes is defined so that a difference of 5 magnitudes corresponds to a ratio of 100 in observed radiation intensity.

Azimuth. Angle measured clockwise around the horizon, from 0* towards the north, through 90* to the east, 180* to the south, 270* to the west, and to 360* due north.

Circumpolar stars. Stars that are close enough to the celestial pole that they do not rise and set each night but can be seen to move around the pole in a circular path. Latitude of observer determines which stars appear circumpolar.

Constellation. A group of stars that seemed to suggest the shape of some god, person, animal or object. Now a term used to designate a region of the sky. There are 88 constellations.

Declination. Angular distance of an object north or south of the celestial equator, measured in degrees. Thus the north celestial pole has a declination of +90 degrees.

Extragalactic. Beyond the Milky Way galaxy.

Latitude. Coordinate used to measure (in degrees) the angular distance of a point or celestial objects above or below an equator.

Light year. Distance that light travels in 1 year.

Longitude. Coordinate used to specify the position of a point or direction around (or parallel to) an equator.

Magnitude. Scale for describing brightness of a celestial object.

Meridian. Great circle, on the celestial sphere or the Earth, that passes through both north and south poles and an observer’s zenith or location.

Orbit. Path traced out by one object around another.

Rotation. Movement (spin) of a body abut an axis that passes through that body. Distinct from revolution, which is motion in an orbit about some point or other body.

Satellite. Body that revolves in orbit around another body. Planets are satellites of the Sun, the Moon is a satellite of the Earth, and artificial satellites have been sent into orbit around the Earth, Moon, Mars and Venus.

Sidereal. Related to the stars. Thus sidereal day, month, period, year: lengths of time intervals specified by motion of some object relative to the stars, as opposed to apparent lengths of those time intervals that will depend on the Earth’s own movements.

Zenith. Point on the sky directly overhead.

Zodiac. Band on the sky, centered on the ecliptic, and about 18 degrees wide, through which the Sun, Moon and planets appear to move through the course of each year.

Quills away now. I want you go outside and see if you can identify any stars. I'll call you back in when class is over.

Ok, class. Time to come in. For homework, I want you to do several things. First, memorize what each of those words mean. Second, I want you to find out exactly how long a light year is and third, I want you to draw me a chart showing the zenith and the zodiac. That's all. You can go back to your nice warm beds now.

We will be continuing the same spell as last time. Wands out, please. Paper is on your desk.

I am glad to see that you are making progress. Many of you have actual managed a nice grade of wood. Please hand all board up here and the paper, too.
Now, I want you to turn to your neighbor and discuss things that this spell is useful for. Find at least five uses. You have half an hour.

Time is up, class. What you have been discussing is now your homework. I want seven inches on two reasons this spell is useful. You may go now.

balloon-troubles lifting
bat-disappointment
bee-meeting friends
bells-good news
birds-good luck
book-learning
cat-treachery
circle-love
coin-payment of debt
cross-trouble on the way
dog-faithful friends
egg-increase
fish-news from abroad
flag-danger
flowers-love
glove-luck and honour

Also, please copy the list so that you have all of the meanings on hand.

Eyes up here, please. Now that you each have a set of these divining disks, I want you to practice using them. They are tokens that will tell you the future, if you can See. Spread them all face down on the table. As you swirl them around clockwise, think of a question. When you feel the time is right, pick one. It will tell you the outcome of the question. Try this for a few questions.

Time is up, now. Take one of these pouches and store your tokens in them. Your homework is to continue keeping a dream diary. We will be doing dream interpretation in the future...

Runes: First Year: Week 2: Tuesday

Professor Babbling
Tuesday
Gryffindor Time: 1:00
Ravenclaw Time: 2:00
Hufflepuff Time: 9:00
Slytherin Time: 2:00
Now that you have learned how to write in runic, I think that it is time for you to learn to what certain runes mean. Please take out a quill and copy down this sign:
Man or Mannaz
The Self
Modesty, Thought, Alturism, Trust
If someone draws this rune, it means that they need to know their self more. They need to stop and reflect. Also, it may mean that they need to trust more and be more modest.

I think that we will just start with one today so that I can explain it.
First, the names. One name is the Elder Futhark Name and the other is a newer name. On this one, Man is the Elder Futhark Name and Mannaz is the newer name. It is handy to know both names.
Second, this is the rune summed up into one or two words.
Next, I expanded on the main meaning.
Last, this is what I think it would mean if I drew this rune for someone. You'll learn how to do that later. It would mean the same thing if you drew the rune for yourself, but then you would know exactly where it applied to.

I want you to memorize this rune, because I will be giving you at least one more next class. Homework is to memorize Mannaz. Class is dismissed.

For next part of your werewolf education I ask you to study the Wolf's Bane Potion. This potion is highly complex, and very difficult to make. It is, however, worth the effort, for it causes the human to turn into a common wolf, not dangerous to anyone. The many ingredient is wolf's bane, as shown on the right. Wolf's bane is extremely poisonous on it's own.
Said to taste bitter, the Wolf's Bane Potion must be drunk a few days before the full moon, during the full moon and a few days afterwards.
Sugar makes it entirely useless.
It was invented by Mr. Damocles Belby, who's nephew Marcus currently attends school here.
I have here a few samples of the plant courtesy of Professor Sprout, which I will pass around. Study the plant and especially the flower. After you are done, pass it on. Once everyone has seen it, I want you to get into groups and draw a diagram of the whole plant.

That is the bell I hear, so please put away your quills. Your homework is to research the Wolf's Bane Potion and find out as many more of the ingredients as you can. 10 house points to the person who finds the most!

Arithmancy: First Year: Week 3: Tuesday

Hufflepuff Time: 10:00
Slytherin Time: 11:00
Now that you have a good idea of your personal number profile, the next thing you are going to learn is how to choose your future. Notice that I said choose, not predict. What you are about to learn is not telling the future but learning how to tackle choices that may come your way. First, I want you to remember your personal number. Got that? Good. Now the first choice we are going to come up against will be something small and rather insignificant. How about what colour you should wear tomorrow? Nice and minor. Now write out tomorrow's date: 11/5/2008
First, reduce all of the numbers: 1+1/5/2+0+0+8 = 2/5/1
Next, add all of the reduced numbers: 2+5+1= 8
So, tomorrow's personal number is 8. Now, add tomorrow's number with your number. For me, that would be: 8+8=16 1+6=7
So for me, tomorrow is a 7 day.

Now you need a list of colors and their numbers.
Here is one:
1 Pink, Brass, Dark Purple
2 Copper, crimson
3 Orange, Gray
4 Yellow, Black, White, Gold
5 Purple, Magenta
6 Metallic
7 Navy, Tan, Plum
8 Green, Blue, Silver
9 Red, Brown

I must admit that I had some trouble finding colours for some numbers.
Compare numbers between colours and what number tomorrow will be for you. Choose which colour you would want to wear the most out of your options.

Just as an exersise for you brain, figure out today's number and what colour you should be wearing. See if you are wearing that colour.

It is time for you to go. Please pack up. Your homework is to think of a decision that is in your future. Use arithmancy to decide. Class is dimissed

Alright, please follow me to Greenhouse 1. Today I wanted to continue your education with reviving my pots of Flitterbloom. First, I would like you to learn a little bit about flitterbloom and why it is called such.
Flitterbloom is a extremely hardy plant with really delicate flowers. The flowers are good for curing anxiety and shyness, as well as recklessness. Of course, they all must be prepared in very different ways.
While flitterbooms are not poisonous, it is not prudent to eat them. They will cause you to become very shy and jumpy until you are given the antidote of pepperup potion.
I will now turn on this wireless and you will here what Tilden Toots has to say about reviving flitterblooms.
(To access the wireless (radio), go to the above link and click on the hairbrush. Once you are there, click on the on/off switch for the radio. Also, a transcription for the show can be found here.)
Now that you have heard what Tilden Toots has to say, please take a tray of plants and the two bottles and begin.
(To find your flitterbloom, go back to the deck, click on the eraser and look to your left.)

If everyone could please bring up their trays and bottles, because I do here the bell. Your Homework is to draw a diagram of the flitterbloom. Well done, class. You are dismissed.

Magicians, witches and wizards have been portrayed as bevolent and malevolent, practitioners of true magic and false trickery. You will be shown a picture that was made by a muggle showing a magical act. Your job will be to look at the picture and write what you think is happening, if you think it ever happened, and if you think it is shown accurately. Here is the first image:

Quills away, please. If you haven't finished, your Homework is to complete your description. Class is dismissed.

Since you have passed the milestone of working your first spell, I thought that it would be nice for you to learn another one. You did very well on the first one, so the second should be easy enough. First, though, I need you to demonstrate that you can do the Levitation spell. One at a time please!

Very good! First let me get those feathers out of your way... Accio Feathers! Now we can begin. I wanted to teach you the Wand Lighting and Extinguishing spells. For the lighting, hold your wand out in front of you and imagine a flame or a glowing light at the tip. Say Lumos! Try this until you can do it easily.

Next you need to learn how to extinguish it at will. Before, while you practiced, the light went out after a few seconds. This is because you could not project enough energy into the wand and hold your consentration, so the light died. But at some time, you will be able to hold that light for an indefinite time. Then you may need to put it out in a hurry. So you will need to say nox or the wand Extinguishing spell. Try it now.

Time is up, so you will need to practice more while you are in your dormitory. Wands away class. Your homework is to keep a record of how long you can hold your light. Turn it in next class. You are dismissed.

Today we are going to see just how much information your brains have absorbed. You will be taking something of a test. No looking back at past lesson, notes, or potion books. Cheating will be punished by detention and points deducted.

  1. Name five ingredients in the Warming Potion
  2. How many beetle eyes were in the Sleeping Potion?
  3. How many times in total should you stir a Sleeping Potion?
  4. Name the length of time a Cooling Draught should be boiled
  5. Cheering Potions should be simmered for how long?
  6. Name one potion that you have made and tell how it worked for you

Your time is up. Put your quills down and hand your papers to me. You have no homework. Class, you are dismissed.

Gather round, gather round. Today I am going to tell you about a creature that you will not be able to meet. It is a bit large and rare for me to import one. You should take out a quill and piece of parchment to take notes.

Khamador Serpens is a distant cousin of the non-magical Komodo Dragon. They look a lot like the Komodos in body shape and size, but their coloring is very different, being strongly blue on the back. The blue gradates into their yellow-green feet. They are fifteen feet in length on average, with a six inch toungue that is forked and bright purple. Most speciemens reside in Asia and Australia.

That is all, class. I will dismiss you early. Your homework is to look up what a Komodo Dragon looks like and draw what you think a Khamador Serpens looks like. Until Wednesday, class.

Hello class. Today we will begin with a cheering potion. As always, the instructions are on the blackboard. The supply closet was recently restocked so don't say that we are out of something or I personally will make certain you get detention.

Potion's Black Board
Cheering Potion
Ingredients:
Fire mint
2 pieces Mandrake root
½ a Trolls finger, crushed
Petrified Fairy's Tears
Moonflower
Water
Your favorite power stone
Small power stones
Instructions:
Measure out a 3/4 a cup of water and put it in your cauldron. Add the mandrake root and 1/4 tsp scoop of fire mint. Stir. Put in two pinches moonflower at the same time as three fairy's tears. Bring to a boil, and then simmer for one minute. Remove from the flames. Next, add a 1/8 teaspoon scoop of small power stones and your favorite power stone. To mix, add another 3/4 cup of water. You now have a cheering potion! Smell it to lift your spirits. After you are done with the potion, fish out the power stone-it can be used again, strain out the large hunks and throw them away and pour the rest of the potion down the drain.

Alright class. Your time is up. Please bottle some of your potion for grading and bring that bottle and the cloth up. Your homework is below.

We will be returning to the pumpkins today. I have put a darkening spell around them so that you can see them in their splendor. Follow me please!

There they are. You can see the glowing outline of where you cut. Today your jobs will be to remove the cut sections. Obviously, you will not be using the same knives as last time! These pumpkins are six feet tall after all. To remove the pieces, take these sheets of metal and wedge it into one of the cracks. You should start at the bottom. Slide the metal in and press on the edge. The piece should start to move. Do this on all sides, until the piece slides out.

Now that everyone has a piece out, I want you to climb in. The pumpkin is hollow, and remarkably dry, so you don't have to get all slimy. Climb in and push on all the pieces until they come out.

Once your pieces are out, use the levitating spell that Professor Flitwick taught you. Levitate the pieces and move them over to that compost pile. Class time is almost over, so you should hurry.

Time is up, class! Later I will put a preserving spell on these fine pumpkins so that they will stay firm until the feast. See you next class.

Because I do not know if all of you know the history of Hogwarts, that is what we will be studying next, starting with the four founders.

Godric Gryffindor was one of the most accomplished dueller of his time and the original owner of the Sorting Hat. He supported letting muggles into Hogwarts. He had a famous enemity with Salazar Slytherin. His house is championed as brave.
Salazar Slytherin, who was a parselmouth. Salazar did not like the idea of letting muggles learn with the magical students. His house is cunning and persistant.
Rowena Ravenclaw was the wisest witch of her time. She chose the students who had a ready wit and loved learning.
Helga Hufflepuff was accepting of anyone, and treated them equally. She prized the traits of loyalty and being unafraid of toil.

Homework: Go to JK Rowling's site and find the pictures of each founder. Also, write a report on the founder of your house.

Wands out, please. I need you to prove that each of you can do the spells to turn a needle into a match and back. Please take your match and wand and line up in front of my desk. You will have three tries for it to count. Three at a time.

You all passed well enough, however those of you who didn't get it on the second try will need to practice tonight as well as the homework that I will give you at the end of class.
Now you will be learning a new spell. Since it is your second spell, it is another easy one. You will be turning paper into wood. I don't expect any of you will be managing more then cardboard, but you need to start somewhere. Please take out a sheet of paper, not parchment. The spell is ortinalis. You may begin. I will tell you when class is over. It will be in about half an hour.

Paper away please. If any of your sheets are too heavy and wood like, please bring them up to me and I will restore them to their original state. Your homework is to practice. But please remember to use paper. Parchment is not pleasant when this spell is used on it. Also, I would like you to think of a spell that you would like to learn. Class is dismissed.

Today is the day the you will learn the last eight. Please take out your copy of the runic alphabet and consentrate on the last eight runes, writing things with them, trying to remember them. At first, use your sheet, then try without. Once you feel that you have them down pretty well, you can use the whole alphabet.

Your attention please! It is now time for you to translate this class's translation. You have about half an hour. Once the whole scroll is translated, please follow the instructions on it. Try without looking at your sheet unless you really need to.

Half an hour is up. Please pull away your quills and turn towards me. Your homework will be to write me a letter in runic without looking at your sheet. I will be able to decipher your letter, never fear. Class, you are dismissed.

Gryffindor Time: 11:00
Ravenclaw Time: 1:00
Hufflepuff Time: 9:00
Slytherin Time: 1:00
Since we have now covered vampires, I think that I want you to study werewolves next. I do not know how much each of you knows about werewolves, so I will start at the beginning.
A werewolf is a human that is forced to change into a blood thirsty wolf at every full moon. Most people do not wish such a transformation and consider it shameful and something to be hidden. It is true that most werewolves have a harder time getting jobs because people are afraid that they may be bitten by their employees.
Werewolves are only as dangerous as any other human on any other day than the full moon. Once the light of the full moon falls on them, then they become a full fledged monster.
Lycanthropy, the term for the condition of being a werewolf, is contagious through bites and occationally heritage. If you are bitten on any other day than the full moon, however, you may become a bit wolfish, but not be a fully fledged werewolf.

Please put away your notes. Your homework is to read about the werewolf in a copy of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and read this link about werewolves. Also, copy out the definition of werewolf and lycanthropy from a dictionary. Class is dismissed.

Muggle Studies: First Year: Week 2: Wednesday

Professor Charity Burbage
Wednesday
Gryffindor Time: 10:00
Ravenclaw Time: 11:00
Hufflepuff Time: 9:00
Slytherin Time: 11:00
Welcome back, class! I am glad to see you all dressed in muggle clothing. I thought that we should study muggle transportation first. Please take out a muggle pen and paper.
The most common way is the automobile or car. Here and here are some photos of cars.
Another way muggles travel is by airplane. Airplanes are large airships that noisly rumble through the sky. It is not quite certain how these airplanes stay up without magic. There is a picture of an airplane here.
One more popular way for muggles to travel is by train. You have ridden on one before, obviously. It was the Hogwarts Express. While you were at Kings Cross, did you notice the muggle trains? I want you to turn to your neighbor and tell them about one thing you noticed while in Kings Cross about muggle trains.

We now have just enough time for you to get back into your uniforms before your next class. Please put away your pen and paper. Your Homework is either to compare the car, plane or train to the wizarding equivalent or to write a brief history of the car, plane or train. Class is dismissed.

Care of Magical Creatures: First Year: Week 2: Wednesday

Professor Kettleburn
Wednesday
Gryffindor Time: 11:00
Ravenclaw Time: 10:00
Hufflepuff Time: 10:00
Slytherin Time: 9:00
As you all should have noticed, the two creatures that we have studied so far are both very different. One lives in water, while the other lives in air. To see how different they both are, I want you to make a comparison chart. On a scroll, make three even columns. Title the one on the far left 'Characteristics', the middle 'Augurey' and the last 'Hippocamus'.
Now you have to list characteristics and if they have them, and if they do, how many. For example, write 'Wings' in column one, 'Two' in the Augurey Column, and 'None' in the Hippocampus column. Do this for as many characteristics as you can.

Quills away, class. To help you understand why we did this, I want you to compile a report on how Augurys and Hippocampus are different. You see, when you don't know what something is, if you have a hunch on what it might be, you make a comparison list and see if most things check out. That is all, class.

Ravenclaw Time: 9:00
Hufflepuff Time: 11:00
Slytherin Time: 10:00
Wands out! I want to see you do 'flick, swish, point'. Well done, class, well done! I believe that you may be ready to truly start working on some spells! The one that we will begin with is the charm to make things fly. The incantation for it is 'Wingardium Leviosa'. Repeat after me. "Wingardium Leviosa!" Again! "Wingardium Leviosa!" One more time! This time, imagine the feather in front of you flying while you say the incantation. "Wingardium Leviosa!"
Nicely done! Now, don't forget the nice wrist movement we've been practicing! For this spell, you only need to use swish and flick. And saying the magic words properly is very important, too - never forget Wizard Baruffio who said 's' instead of 'f' and found himself on the floor with a buffalo on his chest. Now go ahead, give it a try. I'll tell you when class is over.

That's the bell, class. Please put your wands away and go on to your next class. Remember, practice makes perfect.

I though that it would be good to start out tonights lesson with a story. This story goes with the
constellation that we will find afterwards. There are two different legends, the Roman legend and the Greek legends. These legends are about a dragon. First, the Roman legend.

The Roman legend calls this dragon Ladon and he guarded the golden apples on a tree in a garden tended by the Hesperides, the daughters of Atlas. Hercules was sent to obtain the apples while under pledge to Eurystheus. He learned from Nereus that he could not pluck the apples himself, but must get help from Atlas. Hercules shot and killed Ladon with an arrow, making way for Atlas to enter and pluck the golden apples. The goddess Hera was greatly distressed by the death of Ladon and placed the dragon in the heavens as a constellation.

A Greek legend tells the story of Draco as a horrible dragon that guarded a sacred spring and slew the soldiers of Cadmus (first king of Thebes) who had been sent to gather water. Cadmus then fought the dragon and won,. After the dragon died, Athena appeared and told Cadmus to sow the ground with the creature's teeth. The teeth immediately sprang up as a group of armed soldiers who helped Cadmus found Thebes.

We call this constellation Draco. You will find it half wrapped around the Little Dipper. If you will please go up the stairs and outside, we will try to find Draco. Once you have found him, please copy down the constellation and surrounding constellations. When you are finished, please turn in your star chart and return to your dormitory. There will be no homework.

Professor Babbling
Tuesday
Gryffindor Time: 1:00
Ravenclaw Time: 2:00
Hufflepuff Time: 9:00
Slytherin Time: 2:00
Please take out your homework, I will be coming around to collect it.
Good, I'm glad you all turned in something. I hope that you find that it is becoming easier to read and write runic.
Again, I want you to get out your sheet and write again. This time you will be writing using the first and second row. Start with your sheet at first, then try to do it without. Once you have had some general practice, write a note to someone in this classroom. Don't make it too long, just a few sentences.

Now I would like you to look up here. Please get out a fresh piece of parchment and translate the scroll that I will place on your desk. I did write it in a way that makes more sense than last time, but it doesn't really make much sense. Once you have translated your scroll, translate any notes you recieved, but don't write a reply.

Your half hour is up. Please look up here. When I say you are dismissed, pack up. But before you do, I want you to note that your Homework is to try to write out all of the alphabet that we have learned so far without looking at your sheet. Don't even look at your sheet to see if you got it right. I want you to turn in your first attempt, uncorrected. Class is dismissed.

Today we will be continuing our study of vamipres with a lesson on methods of preventing vampires. While it is impossible to reverse vampirism, it is possible to prevent contamination from a vampire bite. As you will find in your Fiendish Field Guide
"Complex diabolic pacts and certain obscure black magic rites have been known to create vampires; evil sorcerers and some lycanthropes that have died may rise again to become vampires; extremely evil men (or women) who die while committing an evil act may return as vampires. The most common and sure-fire method of becoming a vampire is to die from a vampire bite. The sanguinary bite (or "kiss") of a vampire is its method of perpetuating its breed, and those rising from the dead to become vampires are subject to the will of the vampire that originally bit him/her. The bite of the vampire is usually detected as two small but swollen puncture wounds; often referred to as "the Seal of Dracula"."
While not entirely accurate in the habits of the vampire, the Fiendish Field Guide is correct in this respect. The simplest way to prevent someone to become a vampire is to keep them alive after they have been bitten. As vampires are 'living dead', if someone doesn't die, they obviously cannot become a vampire. Many potions are useful, such as the Draught of Living Death, which will suspend the process of death by vampire bite. Wolfsbane potion is also useful in preventing syptoms appearing.

Homework: Explain in your own words why a person does not always become a vampire even if they are bitten.

Hello, my dears... If you will recall, we where working on learning certain key signs. While I do find memorization a bore, and I am sure that you do agree, it is quite nessecary. If, say, you suddenly saw a flag in the bottom of your tea, then you will wish to know immediately whether this is good or bad. In fact, you should know then that you are in grave danger.

Please take out a quill and write out what you think each one means.
The Arrow
The Coin
The Circle
The Owl
The Triangle

I will take your scrolls of the class. Please get out a new piece of parchment and copy down these signs:
The Book-Learning
The Cat-Treachery
The Fish-News from Abroad
The Sun-Continued Happiness
The Wings-News
The Cross-Trouble on the Way

I did not have you research them, because I wanted to have you practice your tea leaf reading. When you put your scrolls away, please take a cup from the shelf and pour yourself a cup of tea. You should remember how it is done... the three swirls with your left hand... the three taps...
If any of your signs in your cup are ones that we have studied, try to remember them before looking them up. You have half an hour...

Half an hour is up. Please return cups gently to the sink over there. You have no homework other than to memorize your signs. Until next time...

Today we will be resuming turning needles to matches. If someone would please step up and hand out needles... Thank you. You should remember your spell. I will give you ten minutes to practice, and then anyone who has succeeded will then try turning their match back to a needle.

If everyone would please look up here... Thank you. Now below is the diagram for turning your match into a needle. The spell is scipioacus. When you have succeed in transfiguring a match, try to turn it back into a needle.

The bell has rung, so if everyone would look up here I will tell you your Homework. You are to practice turning your match to a needle and back again. That is all. You are dismissed.

Please take out your homework and a quill. I want you to copy onto your sheet what I have written on the black board.

Arithmancy Black Board
1 Lettuce
2 Apple, Raspberry, Mango, Beans, cocoa, chips

4 Cinnamon, Candy
5 Pasta
6 Bread, Wheat, Toffee, Juice, Yam, Noodles,
7 Tofu, Tortillia, Burger, tea
8 Coffee, Water, Ham
9 Beef, Cheese

Now, pull out a new sheet. Draw in the middle a circle. In that circle, write your name and your heart, social and character numbers. Draw five lines coming off it. Title one food, one number, one color, one animals, and the last wand. Under food, write the foods that correspond with your number, do the same under numer, writing the one that exactly corresponds with all your numbers added.
Now take out yet another sheet and write down ten animals. Figure their number and write down all that are compatible with your number. If none are, write down ten more and figure. Repeat this until you have one that matches your number.

Quills down please. You do not have any homework. Class is dismissed.

I would like you to all follow be down to the lake. I fear that this lesson cannot take too long, for the giant squid is not liking the newest inhabitant, and I will need to help them get along.

Just a moment. I'll dive in to call him up. Alright, everyone gather around. This is a hippocampus or a merhorse. I saw him a few days ago. Apparently, the merpeople of this lake captured him and brought him here to ride. He is just barely out of the egg, a regular tadfoal. Normally, they live in the Mediterranean, but this one seems to be surviving just fine. I'm going to get out now and bring him near to you. He won't come out as his second half is fish. You can come up now, and pet him.

He is getting very restless, as you can see. If the last of you would come up and touch him... Alright. Now watch him go. If you look close enough, you should be able to see the merpeople reclaiming him. Off you go. No homework tonight!

Today we will work with a cooling draught. As always, the instructions are on the blackboard. I felt that last potion was a bit callenging for you, so today's is without fire. I certainly hope that you can make this simple potion go right. I was very disappointed with last classes results.

Potions Black Board
Cooling Potions
2 Gnome teeth, chopped
1 beetle eye
Fire mint
Power stone
Water
2 bird’s eyes
Instructions: Measure out 1 cup of cold water. Put it in your cauldron. Drop in a bird’s eye. Squish the beetle eye and add that too. Stir. Next add a small scoop of fire mint. Crush the second bird’s eye and add. Then add the gnome teeth and add 2 more teaspoons of water. Stir five times and let sit for 5 minutes. While the potion is soaking, choose four powerstones, two of them about an inch across and the other two about a quarter of an inch round. When the potion is finished soaking, drop the powerstones in and stir twenty times in opposite directions slowly. When the potion has stopped swirling, plunge in your hands and retrieve the stones. The smaller ones should be set behind your ears, right beneath the lobe, while the larger ones are meant to be set on your wrists. You should be colder soon. If the effects wear off, soak them once more.

Alright class. Your time is up. Bottle some of your potion for grading and bring that bottle up to me. Put in it one of the stones. Your homework is below.

Homework Research and write a report on what powerstones would be best for this potion.

I now would like everyone to bring their plant up to me to prove that it is still alive.

Because it is twenty-five days to Halloween, I thought that you would enjoy learning about one of the plants we use to decorate the Great Hall. There is a separate bed for these plants because they are so big. Please take one of these bags and follow me.

Most people recognize these plants. They are pumpkins. However, these are no ordinary pumpkins. These ones will grow to a tremendous size and glow from the inside. Your job will be to cut a design into them and mulch them so that they grow big. You will be drawing the design first. Please open your bag and take out everything. You will find a knife, a pad of paper, a quill and a bottle of ink. You can put back the knife, it isn't used until later.
Sketch several ideas for the Jack o' Lantern you will be making. It doesn't have to be a face. It can be anything. Sketch until you have an idea you like. You have ten minutes.

Quills down, please. Tear off the sheet of paper with your finished drawing and put everything else back in your bag. Once you have done that, please choose a pumpkin and stand beside it. I will come around and transfer your design to the pumpkin. Once it is transferred, take you knife and cut through all the lines, but don't take out the pieces. You have twenty minutes.

Twenty minutes are up, so I hope that your design is cut. Now you will take a wheelbarrow and fill it with this mulch. Set the mulch all around your pumpkin and it's plant. This mulch is a combination of dragon dung, leaves and enchanted bark. It will help your pumpkin to grow larger than normal.

Very good work, everyone. If you step back, you will see that your pumpkin has grown quite a bit. We will be visiting them at a later class, but for now, head back to the castle early so that you can wash up before your next class. You are dismissed.

Although the Werewolf has no sense of obeying laws, there are rules stating when and how werewolves can be restrained. Created in 1637, the Werewolf Code of Conduct addresses not the werewolf, but the witch or wizard who encounters them. For instance, if a witch or wizard comes across a werewolf who threatens to bite, the witch or wizard is allowed to constrain the werewolf in any possible way, but is not allowed to kill the offending beast. Also, no one is allow to constrain an untranformed werewolf who is in their human form in any way or for any reason that they wouldn't use on a ordinary person.
The Werewolf Code of Conduct also contains a clause stating rules that a person who is a werewolf but untransformed must obey. These include having to carry identification on hand at all times so that if they ever bite or injure another, the bites can be properly treated.
A current version of the Code of Conduct is being reviewed.

Now, class, I want you to each step up and demonstrate your homework, 'swish, point'.
I'm very glad that you all practiced and your wand work is definitely improving. I was thinking that today would be a good day to begin the last movement before you learn a spell. The last movement you are going to learn is 'flick'. Start with your wand in the position that you start 'point' in. In a quick movement, let your wand fall a few inches, then quickly bring it back up, just as if you are getting rid of a fly on the end. Remember that all movement should be from the wrist. Practice that movement until it is one quick tap.

Now that you all know 'swish', 'point', and 'flick', I'm going to combine them. Do the movement of 'flick, swish, point'. Do this over and over until you can do it effortlessly and automatically.

OK class, I hear the bell. You may put your wands away and your Homework is to practice 'flick, swish, point'. Also practice each one separately and try your own combinations.

Today we will be doing the warming potion. The process is the same as last time. Instructions are, of course, on the black board. You should have your potion finished by the time class is up.

Potions Black Board

Warming Potion
Ingredients:
1 Phoenix Feather
Fire Crab
Firemint
Petrified Fairy Tears
4 Gnome teeth
1 Ginger Root
Instructions
From the tap get three cups of warm water. Keep this water simmering. Add 1/4 of a teaspoon of firemint and two fire crab shells to your potion. Stir 7 times. Add another cup of warm water. Chop up the gnomes teeth. Add to your potion. Next drop in a tablespoon of fairy's tears. Bring to a rolling boil, then back to a low simmer. After simmering for 70 seconds, freeze it immediatly. Rub all over with the ginger root. Melt over high heat. To apply, dip the phoenix feather in the potion and brush along all exposed areas. When that area is warm, rinse off the potion with cold water. The warming effect will linger.

Class time is now up. Bring your bottled potion forward for grading.

Homework
Write a paragraph on your theory about why you are meant to freeze, then thaw the potion.

Now that I have seen that you can at least handle researching plants and learning how to handle them, I want you to learn how to care for them. Again, we will be working with muggle plants, but if you show that you are capable of handling plants, next week we will move onto magical ones. I will give you each your own plant to take with you back to your dorm. You will need to do these things:

Put your plants as near to sunny windows as possible for optimum growth. If you notice your plant becoming thin and reaching toward the light, it needs to be closer to the sunshine. Now there are some exceptions to this. Not all plants need a lot of sunlight. But most do. I think all the plants we will be working with need plenty of sun

Water correctly. Here's how to tell when and how much to water. Stick your finger in the dirt about an inch or so. In most cases, water your plant when the soil is slightly dry and give it enough water so that it comes out the holes at the bottom of your container somewhat.

This is really all you will need to know. It will only be for the weekend, so you will not need to worry about long term things like fertilizing. Please step up to the table and choose your plant. I will also give you a watering can. Mark both with your name so that you can tell whose is whose.

We only have about ten minutes, so I ask that you consult with your neighbors and any books you might have with you. Try to figure out what your plant is called. If you still haven't figured it out by the time that the bell rings, bring your plant up to me and I will tell you what it is called.

That is the bell, chaps! Anyone who doesn't know what their plant is called should come up to me. Everyone else is dismissed. Your Homework is to care for your plant.
