Runes: First Year: Week 2: Tuesday

Professor Babbling
Tuesday
Gryffindor Time: 1:00
Ravenclaw Time: 2:00
Hufflepuff Time: 9:00
Slytherin Time: 2:00
Please take out your homework, I will be coming around to collect it.
Good, I'm glad you all turned in something. I hope that you find that it is becoming easier to read and write runic.
Again, I want you to get out your sheet and write again. This time you will be writing using the first and second row. Start with your sheet at first, then try to do it without. Once you have had some general practice, write a note to someone in this classroom. Don't make it too long, just a few sentences.

Now I would like you to look up here. Please get out a fresh piece of parchment and translate the scroll that I will place on your desk. I did write it in a way that makes more sense than last time, but it doesn't really make much sense. Once you have translated your scroll, translate any notes you recieved, but don't write a reply.

Your half hour is up. Please look up here. When I say you are dismissed, pack up. But before you do, I want you to note that your Homework is to try to write out all of the alphabet that we have learned so far without looking at your sheet. Don't even look at your sheet to see if you got it right. I want you to turn in your first attempt, uncorrected. Class is dismissed.

Defense Against the Dark Arts: First Year: Week 2: Tuesday

Professor Cadmus Quirrell
Tuesday
Gryffindor Time: 11:00
Ravenclaw Time: 10:00
Hufflepuff Time: 1:00
Slytherin Time: 1:00
Today we will be continuing our study of vamipres with a lesson on methods of preventing vampires. While it is impossible to reverse vampirism, it is possible to prevent contamination from a vampire bite. As you will find in your Fiendish Field Guide
"Complex diabolic pacts and certain obscure black magic rites have been known to create vampires; evil sorcerers and some lycanthropes that have died may rise again to become vampires; extremely evil men (or women) who die while committing an evil act may return as vampires. The most common and sure-fire method of becoming a vampire is to die from a vampire bite. The sanguinary bite (or "kiss") of a vampire is its method of perpetuating its breed, and those rising from the dead to become vampires are subject to the will of the vampire that originally bit him/her. The bite of the vampire is usually detected as two small but swollen puncture wounds; often referred to as "the Seal of Dracula"."
While not entirely accurate in the habits of the vampire, the Fiendish Field Guide is correct in this respect. The simplest way to prevent someone to become a vampire is to keep them alive after they have been bitten. As vampires are 'living dead', if someone doesn't die, they obviously cannot become a vampire. Many potions are useful, such as the Draught of Living Death, which will suspend the process of death by vampire bite. Wolfsbane potion is also useful in preventing syptoms appearing.

Homework: Explain in your own words why a person does not always become a vampire even if they are bitten.

Hello, my dears... If you will recall, we where working on learning certain key signs. While I do find memorization a bore, and I am sure that you do agree, it is quite nessecary. If, say, you suddenly saw a flag in the bottom of your tea, then you will wish to know immediately whether this is good or bad. In fact, you should know then that you are in grave danger.

Please take out a quill and write out what you think each one means.
The Arrow
The Coin
The Circle
The Owl
The Triangle

I will take your scrolls of the class. Please get out a new piece of parchment and copy down these signs:
The Book-Learning
The Cat-Treachery
The Fish-News from Abroad
The Sun-Continued Happiness
The Wings-News
The Cross-Trouble on the Way

I did not have you research them, because I wanted to have you practice your tea leaf reading. When you put your scrolls away, please take a cup from the shelf and pour yourself a cup of tea. You should remember how it is done... the three swirls with your left hand... the three taps...
If any of your signs in your cup are ones that we have studied, try to remember them before looking them up. You have half an hour...

Half an hour is up. Please return cups gently to the sink over there. You have no homework other than to memorize your signs. Until next time...

Today we will be resuming turning needles to matches. If someone would please step up and hand out needles... Thank you. You should remember your spell. I will give you ten minutes to practice, and then anyone who has succeeded will then try turning their match back to a needle.

If everyone would please look up here... Thank you. Now below is the diagram for turning your match into a needle. The spell is scipioacus. When you have succeed in transfiguring a match, try to turn it back into a needle.

The bell has rung, so if everyone would look up here I will tell you your Homework. You are to practice turning your match to a needle and back again. That is all. You are dismissed.
