Care of Magical Creatures: First Year: Week 6: Monday

Ravenclaw Time: 1:00
Hufflepuff Time: 2:00
Slytherin Time: 1:00

Hello everyone. I would like you to please take out a piece of paper and a quill. We're going to learn about gnomes today. Yes, I know, gnomes are often thought of as common garden pests and not worth studying but we're going to learn about them all the same. Even garden pests are worth studying, for if anything, only by studying a creature can one figure out how to eradicate it.

The gnome is a common garden pest in Great Britain, northern North America, and northern Europe. It lives in burrows underground, preferably in a garden. They've been known to steal food items from houses if there isn't a sufficient protection charm. Such a protection charm is easily cast, however, as gnomes have little magic of their own for breaking enchantments.
Gnomes are about a foot high with overly large feet and head. Their head looks like a potato. Their skin is a medium brown, also quite potato-like. Other than their size and disproportions they are human in appearance.
Getting rid of gnomes permanently is quite difficult. Temporarily, the most common solution is to grasp a gnome by the ankles and swing them around until they're dizzy. Once they're properly disoriented they can be dropped over the garden wall and won't return for some time. A more brutal way of pest control is to use a jarvey, which is very fond of eating gnomes.

All right, your homework is to read the entry of gnomes in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. There is an excellent illustration of a gnome in there. Next class we're going to be trying to come up with a pest control that wards of gnomes. Most likely we shall not succeed but we'll try anyway. So bring in five or six things that might ward off gnomes.
Class dismissed!

Care of Magical Creatures: First Year: Week 5: Wednesday

Professor Kettleburn
Wednesday
Gryffindor Time: 11:00
Ravenclaw Time: 10:00
Hufflepuff Time: 10:00
Slytherin Time: 9:00

First, I would like everyone to step up and report their findings on gruagach sightings. Tell with as much detail as you can.

Second, I would like you to start a chart. Take out a piece of parchment and put these titles on it: Human-like, half-human, fully animal. Then figure out where each of the creatures we have studied so far fit in on this chart. I've included a list on the blackboard.

Care of Magical Creatures Blackboard
List of Creatures Studied So Far
Augurey
Hippocampus
Khamador Serpens
Fairies
Gruagach

I want you to keep track of this list for each new creature you study will be added to it. But for now the creatures should be put under the following columns:

Augurey - Fully-Animal
Hippocampus - Fully-Animal
Khamador Serpens - Fully-Animal
Fairies - Human-Like
Gruagach - Human-Like

That is it for today. Your homework is to research half-human creatures and write one that you would like to study under that column. You are dismissed.

Welcome back, class. I'm sorry that you missed Wednesday's class, but it certainly sounded like fun to explore London!

Today I am going to tell you about a creature called the Gruagach. You probably won't get to meet one as they are quite difficult to find and capture, having the intelligence of humans and the ability to shapeshift. They are peculiar in their habits, prefering to be left alone most of the time but feeling sociable during certian seasons, such as during the Harvest. Mostly they only show themselves to wizarding folk, but occasionally appear to muggles, much to the dismay of the Ministry of Magic. Many people believe them to be brownies, but they are not. On the contrary, they live in nature and don't serve any house or manor. It is true that they belong to the 'Hob' family, which is the same as brownies, but there the resemblance ends. Gruagaches can only be found in rural England, Scotland and in some very rare cases, Ireland.
Grugaches can - and will - take on any form. These can range in size from slightly taller than six feet to small enough to ride astride a shrew. The only time a gruagach must take on his or her true form is during the annual meeting, where every gruagach must come to. No one has been able to find this meeting since 1639 and the wizard who did had his eyes gored out in a most painful way. He was found wandering days later missing his tongue and covered in scratches. This is one of the few recorded cases of gruagach violence. All of them were the human's fault, not the creature's.

Your homework is to look up a case of gruagach sighting, if possible, your own. Class is dismissed.

Hello everyone and greetings of the season! Are you excited about the holidays approaching? I was thinking that today we will be catching fairies for decorating in the Great Hall. But first, you should you should learn about them. Please take out your copy of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and turn to 'Fairies' and read about them.

Now, follow me as we go into the edge of the forests. There is a colony of fairies there that are currently hibernating in the roots of the trees. Your job will be to dig them out and trap them in the cages I give you. This shouldn't be too hard if you remember the entry in Fantastic Beasts.

Here we are. If you look in the roots of the trees in this circle, you will see a faint glowing. The fairies are quite curious, so if you make noises out side their homes, they should come out to you. Ready? Here are you cages. Off you go.

I see that your cages are all full, so class will be dismissed early. If you give them to me, I'll send them off to Professor Flitwick with a wave of my wand. Then, off you go to your next class. I won't be seeing you again until January, so I hope you have a wonderful winter break. Your only homework is to try to find a magical creature around your house. Class is dismissed and see you next year!

Care of Magical Creatures: First Year: Week 3: Wednesday

Professor Kettleburn
Wednesday
Gryffindor Time: 11:00
Ravenclaw Time: 10:00
Hufflepuff Time: 10:00
Slytherin Time: 9:00

Today I want to explain to you the different sorts of diets of animals. Generally, you can sort animals into three catagories based on their diet: Herbavore, Carnivore, and Omnivore. A carnivore is an animal that eats only meat. An example of a carnivore is a griffin. A herbivore is an animal that eats only plants. An example of a herbivore is a unicorn. An omnivore is an animal that eats meat and plants. An example of an omnivore is a gnome because a gnome will eat both bugs and the roots of plants.

I want you to think back to October, when I had you make a chart that had you comparing the different traits of different creatures. Now, I want you to make that same chart, only comparing a herbavore, a carnivore, and a ominivore. You don't have to use my examples, you can find your own. I would recommend that you get out your copy of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them for this exersise. I think you have about forty-five minutes to complete this chart. I expect it done by the end of the class.

Forty-five minutes are up! I want all finished charts handed back in to me. If your chart isn't finished, then your homework is to finish it as well as write a report that defines the three catagories and give three examples of each. Class is dismissed.

Gather round, gather round. Today I am going to tell you about a creature that you will not be able to meet. It is a bit large and rare for me to import one. You should take out a quill and piece of parchment to take notes.

Khamador Serpens is a distant cousin of the non-magical Komodo Dragon. They look a lot like the Komodos in body shape and size, but their coloring is very different, being strongly blue on the back. The blue gradates into their yellow-green feet. They are fifteen feet in length on average, with a six inch toungue that is forked and bright purple. Most speciemens reside in Asia and Australia.

That is all, class. I will dismiss you early. Your homework is to look up what a Komodo Dragon looks like and draw what you think a Khamador Serpens looks like. Until Wednesday, class.

Slytherin Time: 9:00
As you all should have noticed, the two creatures that we have studied so far are both very different. One lives in water, while the other lives in air. To see how different they both are, I want you to make a comparison chart. On a scroll, make three even columns. Title the one on the far left 'Characteristics', the middle 'Augurey' and the last 'Hippocamus'.
Now you have to list characteristics and if they have them, and if they do, how many. For example, write 'Wings' in column one, 'Two' in the Augurey Column, and 'None' in the Hippocampus column. Do this for as many characteristics as you can.

Quills away, class. To help you understand why we did this, I want you to compile a report on how Augurys and Hippocampus are different. You see, when you don't know what something is, if you have a hunch on what it might be, you make a comparison list and see if most things check out. That is all, class.

I would like you to all follow be down to the lake. I fear that this lesson cannot take too long, for the giant squid is not liking the newest inhabitant, and I will need to help them get along.

Just a moment. I'll dive in to call him up. Alright, everyone gather around. This is a hippocampus or a merhorse. I saw him a few days ago. Apparently, the merpeople of this lake captured him and brought him here to ride. He is just barely out of the egg, a regular tadfoal. Normally, they live in the Mediterranean, but this one seems to be surviving just fine. I'm going to get out now and bring him near to you. He won't come out as his second half is fish. You can come up now, and pet him.

He is getting very restless, as you can see. If the last of you would come up and touch him... Alright. Now watch him go. If you look close enough, you should be able to see the merpeople reclaiming him. Off you go. No homework tonight!

I wanted to use this class to discuss what a beast is. For those of you who completed your homework of reading the introduction of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, you will know that the final decision on what was a beast and what was a being was defined by Grogan Stump, Minister of Magic 1811, as "[a being is] any creature that has sufficient intelligence to understand the laws of the magical community and to bear part of the responsibility in shaping those laws".
Those that were classified by beasts are studied under the science of Magizoology. I now want you to take out your quill and choose a creature that you feel is unfairly classified as beast. Try to persuade me why.

Quills away now, please. You can hand up your scrolls to me if you have finished, but if you haven't finished, it is now your homework. Class is dismissed.

Welcome to my class, everyone. I thought that I would begin your education in magical creatures with a very interesting bird. Does anyone know what this bird is?

Very good, it is an augurey. As you can see, the augurey looks like a green-black underfed vulture. Generally, they are very shy and hard to find. Fortunately, this one was raised by a human, so he should be comfortable with you. His cry used to be thought to foretell death, but it only predicts rain. You probably won't hear his cry today, as it is a bit bright and sunny. You also will not get to see him fly. I am getting a bit worried about his lack of exersise, due to this drought. Auguries only fly in heavy rain.
He eats insects and fairies, which I will allow you to feed to him.
I will now let each of you come up and hold him, after you put your dragon hide gloves. His talons are very sharp, so be careful.

...now please return him to his perch. Thank you. Your Homework is to read the introduction to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them if you have a copy. If you don't please write a report on the augurey.
