Friday
Gryffindor Time: 11:00
Ravenclaw Time: 1:00
Hufflepuff Time: 1:00
Slytherin Time: 11:00

Today we will be doing the warming potion. The process is the same as last time. Instructions are, of course, on the black board. You should have your potion finished by the time class is up.

Potions Black Board

Warming Potion
Ingredients:
1 Phoenix Feather
Fire Crab
Firemint
Petrified Fairy Tears
4 Gnome teeth
1 Ginger Root
Instructions
From the tap get three cups of warm water. Keep this water simmering. Add 1/4 of a teaspoon of firemint and two fire crab shells to your potion. Stir 7 times. Add another cup of warm water. Chop up the gnomes teeth. Add to your potion. Next drop in a tablespoon of fairy's tears. Bring to a rolling boil, then back to a low simmer. After simmering for 70 seconds, freeze it immediatly. Rub all over with the ginger root. Melt over high heat. To apply, dip the phoenix feather in the potion and brush along all exposed areas. When that area is warm, rinse off the potion with cold water. The warming effect will linger.

Class time is now up. Bring your bottled potion forward for grading.

Homework
Write a paragraph on your theory about why you are meant to freeze, then thaw the potion.

Now that I have seen that you can at least handle researching plants and learning how to handle them, I want you to learn how to care for them. Again, we will be working with muggle plants, but if you show that you are capable of handling plants, next week we will move onto magical ones. I will give you each your own plant to take with you back to your dorm. You will need to do these things:

Put your plants as near to sunny windows as possible for optimum growth. If you notice your plant becoming thin and reaching toward the light, it needs to be closer to the sunshine. Now there are some exceptions to this. Not all plants need a lot of sunlight. But most do. I think all the plants we will be working with need plenty of sun

Water correctly. Here's how to tell when and how much to water. Stick your finger in the dirt about an inch or so. In most cases, water your plant when the soil is slightly dry and give it enough water so that it comes out the holes at the bottom of your container somewhat.

This is really all you will need to know. It will only be for the weekend, so you will not need to worry about long term things like fertilizing. Please step up to the table and choose your plant. I will also give you a watering can. Mark both with your name so that you can tell whose is whose.

We only have about ten minutes, so I ask that you consult with your neighbors and any books you might have with you. Try to figure out what your plant is called. If you still haven't figured it out by the time that the bell rings, bring your plant up to me and I will tell you what it is called.

That is the bell, chaps! Anyone who doesn't know what their plant is called should come up to me. Everyone else is dismissed. Your Homework is to care for your plant.

Gaspard Shingleton was born in 1959 and is still living. He invented the Self-Stirring Cauldon after losing patience with his wife, who notoriously forgot to stir his many potions while he was away. As he had a potion-making business , this was disastrous to business and profit. The Self-Stirring Cauldron has ten long spoons that rotate continually.

Ignatia Wildsmith, 1227-1320, was a witch that got air-sick very easily and, as the cushioning charm was not invented until 1820, she preferred to walk, rather than ride a broom. Also, she was claustrophobic and "would not Apperate to save my life, no I wouldn't!". So after a very long walk from her home to London, which was 142 mile away, she declared that she would stay until she had come up with a better way to travel. So Floo Powder was invented.

Homework is to find Gaspard Shingleton and Ignatia Wildsmith on JKRowling.com (Hint: try Wizard of the Month Archives). Class is dismissed.

Slytherin Time: 9:00
Good Day, everyone. Today you will be finding different things that are compatible with you. For example, my number is eight, thus I should eat coffee, water, and ham.
It will be best if you keep a sheet with things that are compatible. Take out a piece of parchment and number it from 1 to 9. Do the same for two more sheets. You may also want to take out you chart.
I want you to find a food, animal and emotion that is compatible with your number. You may now start calculating.

I know that we only have twenty minutes left, but I will pass out arithmancy calculators. With these, you enter what you are trying to calculate, then add the three numbers together.

Put away your quills and ink now. Your Homework is to find something that is compatible with each number. Class is dimissed

Welcome, my dears, welcome. I am quite pleased with how you did last class, so I just wanted to begin with learning the what certain signs mean. The first ten that will be learned are:
The Arrow
The Coin
The Circle
The Owl
The Triangle

Please turn to your partner and tell them what you think each one means. I will give you a few minutes to dicuss, then I shall tell you the answers...

I hope that you are finish, because I would like you to look up here. I will now tell you what each one means. You may wish to write these down for future referrance. Especially you, my boy. You will find it difficult to remember these. All quills out? Very well:
The Arrow - Bad news in a letter
The Coin - Payment of Debt
The Circle - Love
The Owl - Bad Health
The Triangle - Unexpected Events

I ask that you devote yourself to these signs and remember them for next class. Good fortune to you, my dears.

  1. How do you pronounce ‘Tepes’?
  2. What does it mean?
  3. How many brothers did Vlad have?
  4. What was his native country?
  5. How do you explain Vlad Tepes being able to rule muggles for so long with only one discovering his true nature?

Please put down your pen now and put away your quills. I will come around and collect your parchment. When I have collected yours, you are allowed to go. There will be no homework.

Welcome back, class. Please take out you sheet of runes and put it in front of you. Now I want you to practice writing words using the first nine runes. At first, use your sheet, but as you get better, try it without your sheet. I will give you about twenty minutes to do this.

Please look back up here, class. I will now give you each a scroll to translate. Try to do it without looking at your sheet, but if you really cannot remember a letter, you may look.
I do know that these sentences are nonsense, but they are all formed from the first nine letters of the alphabet. As always, click on the image to get a better view.

If I could have your attention please! I want you to hand in both your own sentences and your translations. Your Homework is to write five more sentences in runic using the first nine letters. Next week we will move onto the next nine. Class is dismissed.

For your first spell, I am going to start you off with a simple transfiguring of

Needle to Match
Following the above diagram, you can see the transformation from a needle to a match. Remember yesterday's notes, and don't expect to do it on your first try. Most people take at least two days to master their first transfiguring spell. The spell is acuincendo. Please take out you wand and begin.

I will come around and examine your work. Once I have seen your match or needle, then you may go to your next class. Your
Homework is to practice.

I wanted to use this class to discuss what a beast is. For those of you who completed your homework of reading the introduction of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, you will know that the final decision on what was a beast and what was a being was defined by Grogan Stump, Minister of Magic 1811, as "[a being is] any creature that has sufficient intelligence to understand the laws of the magical community and to bear part of the responsibility in shaping those laws".
Those that were classified by beasts are studied under the science of Magizoology. I now want you to take out your quill and choose a creature that you feel is unfairly classified as beast. Try to persuade me why.

Quills away now, please. You can hand up your scrolls to me if you have finished, but if you haven't finished, it is now your homework. Class is dismissed.

Good day, class. I hope that you have been practicing your 'swish' motion. Let me see it now as I come around. Just take your wands out and continue practicing the swish. Good, good, very good, you'll be levitating in no time with a swish like that! Try starting a bit more upwards there, very good! Now, class, we will be learning the movement of 'point'. Start with your wand vertical. Now, lower your wand until it is horizantal and pointing at the thing that you are aiming for. If you were casting a spell, you would say the spell as your wand came down. Practice that movement until it is nice and smooth. Class, the next step is to combine the two. This will be called 'swish, point'. First start your wands in the 'swish' starting position. Swish your wands down and up, then point them from this position. Now please practice that until it is one smooth motion.

Thank you class, that will do. I hear the bell ringing and it is time to go. Please put away your wands.

Homework Practice 'swish, point'.

Now, I will go easy on you all, since this is you first night and I know that you all must be very tired. I will just show you two constellations and then let you try to find them in the sky.
Let's try to find the two dippers, or ursa minor and ursa major. You can find a picture of them here.
Study that picture, then please follow me to the top of the tower.

Gaze upward and try to find the dippers. Once you have found them, take out your quill and parchment and draw their positions in the sky.

Has everyone draw the positions? Good. Please give me your star charts and go back to your dormitories for a good nights sleep. There will be no homework.

Welcome to the ancient and mystical art of Divination... Here you will be learning to find what the future may hold. Books will not help you here, my dears... Only some of you will be able to See what lies ahead. Now I ask you to open your inner eye and gaze with me into the future.
Today you will be beginning with the art of tea leaf reading, or tasseomancy.
Please go take a teacup and find a seat at a table. Pour yourself a cup of tea. Now drink it while it is still hot. Drink until only the dregs remain. Now I must ask everyone who is right handed to switch their cup to their left hand. Swirl your dregs three times counter-clockwise and turn you cup upside down onto your saucer. Tap it three times and lift it up. Exchange cups with your partner and consult Unfogging the Future for what you see.

Hello class! The first thing that you need to learn is the legend of how runes came to be. Please take out your books and read pages 5-9
To view pages better, click on them.

Now, reread the story of Odin and take notes this time, please.

If you are done, class, I need you to look this way. We don't have much more time, so I would like you to please copy out the runes on this scroll and save it, for you will need to memorize them.
That is the bell. Your
Homework is to start memorizing your runes and rewrite the story of Odin for me.

Thank you, Rune Scripts for the story of Odin.

Defense Against the Dark Arts: First Year: Week 1: Tuesday

Professor Quirrel
Tuesday
Gryffindor Time: 11:00
Ravenclaw Time: 10:00
Hufflepuff Time: 1:00
Slytherin Time: 1:00

Hello Class. Today we will be beginning our years studying vampires.
Solitary and Friendless, they walk the night in an eternal search for fresh blood. They while away the daylight hours asleep in musty crypts and mountain top castles. They never age, and they don’t fear death, for they are already dead. And if you should see one on the street, you might have no idea that you are staring at a monster.
Physical discription: Tall and sophisticated. White skin, fangs and hair on his palms. Wears a high collared cloak.
A famous vampire is Vlad Tepes, the notoriously bloody and violent ruler of Walachia in the fifteenth century. Vlad was known for impaling his enemies through the heart with wooden stakes, as well as bathing in the blood of the slain after particularly grueling battles.
To destroy vampires: Expose to direct sunlight, Behead it, cremate it, or drive a wooden stake through it’s heart.
Habits: Has to sleep on earth from homeland, cannot abide garlic, has the ability to hypnotize, and able to change into bats, wolves, or mice.
After you pack up your quills and notes, please remember that your Homework is to write a paragraph explain what a vampire looks like and to research Vlad Tepes.

Transfiguration: First Year: Week 1: Tuesday

Professor Minerva McGonagall
Tuesday
Gryffindor Time: 10:00
Ravenclaw Time: 9:00
Hufflepuff Time: 11:00
Slytherin Time: 9:00
Welcome to your first Transfiguration class, everyone. Before we start, I must warn you that I will not tolerate any nonsense from anyone. The art of Transfiguration is one that is too precise to fool around with.
The dictionary defines transfiguration as
" a) A marked change in form or appearance; a metamorphosis
or b)A change that glorifies or exalts."
You should be writting this down.
The dictionary also defines transfigure as
" a)to change in outward form or appearance; transform.
or b) to change so as to glorify or exalt."

Generally, when magical people talk about transfiguring, they are referring to a, not b.
In some cases, such as matches and needles, the transfigurations were entirely unnatural and never meant to be, while in other cases, such as transfiguring a nut to a tree, you are just speeding up to natural process.
Transfiguring living beings are yet another branch of transfiguration, but we won't get into that until later this year. In fact, you won't start transfiguring humans until your sixth year.
Then there is the branch of transfiguration that is called 'Switching Spells' and is only partial transfiguration.
Vanishing and Conjouring are obviously the art of making things vanish and creating things out of nothing. The spell to cause things to be invisible do not fall under this category, however.
The last type I ask you to learn today is the art of human-animal transformation. When I say this, I mean people who can transform themselves to aniamals and back at will. Animagi are quite rare and you will be learning about them in your third year.
Now I want you to learn the correct way for transformation. Before I even tell you the spell to transform a needle to a match, I want you to take one of these needles and follow these directions. Set the needle in front of you. Look at it and consentrate really hard on it turning into a match. This may seem impossible, and truly it is, but it is an exersise that helps you get into the correct frame of mind for when you try it with wands next class. You have ten minutes.

Ten minutes are up! Please pack up you quills and parchment and bring you needle up to me as you leave. Your Homework is to review your notes and do the mind exersise on an object of your choice. Class is dismissed.

Arithmancy: First Year: Week 1: Tuesday

Professor Septima Vector
Tuesday
Gryffindor Time: 9:00
Ravenclaw Time: 1:00
Hufflepuff Time: 10:00
Slytherin Time: 11:00

Hello Class and Welcome! Today you will begin to study the ancient art of Arithmancy, which is older than 2,500 years. It is also called numerology and comes from the Greek words arithmo, meaning number and mancy, meaning prophecy. The most widely used method involves a basic chart. Please refer to the Black Board to see this chart. As you can see, there are numbers between 1 and 9 and each one has three or four letters. Please take out a piece of paper and a quill. We will figure out your personal number. First write out your name like so:

Septima Vector

Next put the corresponding numbers below:

Septima Vector
1572941 453269

Next do the same with all the vowels, then all the constanants:

eia eo
59156

sptm vctr
1724 4329

Now add each line:

Septima Vector
1+5+7+2+9+4+1+4+5+3+2+6+9 = 58

eia eo
5+9+1+5+6 = 26

sptm vctr
1+7+2+4+4+3+2+9 = 32

Now we can't have two number on each line so take to sum of the first and we will reduce it. To reduce a number, separate to numbers and add them together (5+8= 13). Reduce until the sum is a single number (1+3 =4) Do that to the other lines.

Septima Vector
1+5+7+2+9+4+1+4+5+3+2+6+9 = 58 = 13 = 4

eia eo
5+9+1+5+6 = 26 = 8

sptm vctr
1+7+2+4+4+3+2+9 = 32 = 5

To get your personal number, add all of the reduced numbers (4,8,5) as if they were a new line (4+8+5= 17). Now reduce (1+7 = 8). Thus eight is my personal number.
Now that is all for now. Please refer to the homework below and copy out the chart. Class dismissed.

Homework
Figure out the number of two pets or friends.

Professor Severus Snape
Monday
Gryffindor Time: 10:00
Ravenclaw Time: 2:00
Hufflepuff Time: 2:00
Slytherin Time: 10:00

Hello class. Today we will begin with a sleeping potion. Not that you look like you need it. You all look as if a single drop would send you off to dreamland. But we will begin with it anyway. It is simple enough for the least dunce to do. The recipe is on the blackboard. I will check your cauldrons when class is over.

Potion's Black Board
Sleeping Draught
Ingredients:
13 Beetle Eyes
Water
Crushed Basilisk Bones
1 Black Power Stone
Fire Mint
Moon Flower
A Square of Cloth

Instructions
Fill your Cauldron half full of water and boil. Mash one beetle eye. Crumble it into the boiling water. Add one cup of water to your cauldron and mash another beetle and add it. Stir twice. Add one tablespoon of the basilisk bones. DO NOT STIR! Add a teaspoon of moonflower and an 1/8 of a teaspoon of firemint. Stir 10 times. Drop the other beetle eyes in uncrushed. Then add the powerstone. Let the potion simmer for thirteen minutes, then cool for 19 minutes. Fish the power stone out with a spoon. Wash it in cold water. It can be used again at another time. Let the cloth soak in the strained potion for seven minutes. Let it dry. Place it above the head of the person you wish to cause to go to sleep.

Alright class. Your time is up. Please bottle some of your potion for grading and bring that bottle and the cloth up. Your homework is below.

Homework
Copy down the instructions. Write an essay on how your potion 'behaved' during the making of it.

Good Day Class! Today we will begin with studying Muggle Herbs. I know you would like to start by studying magical plants, but I must make certain that you can handle Muggle plants before you handle magical plants. You will begin by choosing a herb from below. Click on the link to see more about this
herb.

Basil
Chamomile
Catnip
Lavender

Mint

Thyme

Alright. Now that you have your herb, you need to research it. You may use whatever resources you have, including the Hogwarts Library. If you are going there, please tell me. You will need to be back ten minutes before the bell strikes. Class, disperse.

Homework
Using your facts, write an essay on your herb. This is due next class.

Charms: First Year: Week 1: Monday

Professor Filius Flitwick
Monday
Gryffindor Time: 9:00
Ravenclaw Time: 9:00
Hufflepuff Time: 10:00
Slytherin Time: 11:00

Good day class! I'm glad to see that you are all present for your first class. I am Professor Flitwick, your teacher for charms. Now I know that all of you wish to begin enchanting things immediately, but first you need to learn some basic wand movements and rules about spell casting. First the rules. Please write these down, because you never know when you might need them.
  • Number one. Spells should not be used for every little thing. Don't forget to do things manually! It may be easier to just lift something with your wand, but there is pleasure to be had in actually moving things by had.
  • The next rule I can't stress hard enough. NOT NEAR MUGGLES! I repeat. NOT NEAR MUGGLES! Any ideas why not? You? Yes, that is one way of putting it. One of the reasons that we shouldn't do magic near muggles is because they will want magic solutions to all of their problems. Any other ideas? No? Well, there is also the problem of the muggles habit of burning witches. You'll learn about that from Professor Binns, I expect. However, muggles generally fear what they can't explain and magic is one of those things. So! Don't do magic near muggles!
Those are only two rules, but they are extremely important and will apply to you your whole life. Now would everyone get out their wand please? We will begin by learning and practicing the basic movement of swish.
Start by pointing your wand at a forty-five degree angle to the left. Now tip it downwards until it is horizontal. While it is still horizontal, move it to your right and slightly upward until you finish in the same position, only on the right. Practice this until it is one smooth movement of the wrist.

That's all for now. Please put away your wands and go to your next class.
Homework:

Practice 'Swish' and write a paragraph on why you think that we shouldn't practice magic around muggles.

The Wizengamot was formed in 1044 by Judge Bagshot. At first it was like the muggle jury with 25 wizards that decide who was right. The judge, attorneys, etc. were not part of the organization. Later the group decide to include the judge and became the official wizarding court group. Witches were not allowed onto it until 1912 when their protesting took some effect. Even then it was another 6 months before a woman was voted onto the Wizengamot. Since then the Wizengamot has grown to 200 in number.

The way a witch or wizard get accepted to the wizengamot is by first being nominated for the position by three members in good standing. To be nominated, you need to have done something out standing for the wizarding society or something equally as great. You then will need to be voted in by a majority of the Wizengamot.

Homework: Write a paragraph on the Wizengamot.

Welcome to my class, everyone. I thought that I would begin your education in magical creatures with a very interesting bird. Does anyone know what this bird is?

Very good, it is an augurey. As you can see, the augurey looks like a green-black underfed vulture. Generally, they are very shy and hard to find. Fortunately, this one was raised by a human, so he should be comfortable with you. His cry used to be thought to foretell death, but it only predicts rain. You probably won't hear his cry today, as it is a bit bright and sunny. You also will not get to see him fly. I am getting a bit worried about his lack of exersise, due to this drought. Auguries only fly in heavy rain.
He eats insects and fairies, which I will allow you to feed to him.
I will now let each of you come up and hold him, after you put your dragon hide gloves. His talons are very sharp, so be careful.

...now please return him to his perch. Thank you. Your Homework is to read the introduction to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them if you have a copy. If you don't please write a report on the augurey.
